A Research Vessel Master has overall responsibility and accountability for ensuring the safe operation of the vessel, the safety and security of all onboard and the protection of the environment, including but not limited to the safe navigation and efficient operation of the vessel and delivery of all onboard scientific research.
They have overall command of the vessel and are responsible for the effective and efficient management of the vessel itself, including operational, scientific, departmental and administrative functions onboard and the day to day line management of all crew members assigned to the vessel.
The Master is accountable to the Research Ship Manager for all operational, technical (joint with the vessel’s Chief Engineer and Engineering Manager) and onboard crew matters.
Expectations of the role:
Exceptional professional mariner skill sets (including DP experience), instinctive situational awareness, demonstrable leadership, managerial and administrative experience, well developed communication skills and an ability to think in a creative and innovative manner.
Able to demonstrate a strong awareness of research vessel operating and scientific environments, a robust approach to customer engagement and a proactive and positive approach to programme delivery.
An ability to establish a close working relationship with internal (Marine, Technical and Programme Managers) and external stakeholders in respect to marine and operational matters.
Support senior management ashore in delivering the Company’s vision and lead and mentor the team onboard in support of that ambition and individual career development.
