As Head of the Deck Department onboard, the Chief Officer will have responsibility and accountability for
the safe and efficient running of the Deck Department by ensuring effective management and use of
manpower and resource.
He will support the Master in his role as required and as a senior manager onboard will assist in ensuring the delivery of the scientific research, refit and maintenance programmes.
In addition, they should be prepared to act as Master / Officer in Charge when required and will undertake the duties of the Ship Security Officer and Assistant Shipboard Safety Officer.
Expectations of the role:
Strong professional mariner skills, situational awareness and demonstrable leadership, managerial and administrative experience, well developed communication skills and an ability to think in a creative and innovative manner.
Able to demonstrate a strong awareness of research vessel operating and scientific environments, a robust approach to customer engagement and a proactive and positive approach to programme delivery.
To support the Master in establishing close working relationships with internal (Marine, Technical and Programme Managers) and external stakeholders in respect to marine and operational matters.
To support the Master and senior management ashore in delivering the Companies vision and lead and mentor their Department onboard in support of that ambition and individual career development.
